Date Night

Size: 16.5 x 10.75 w/bleed on 17.5 x 11.75

Completed April 2014 | Gouache Paints with Coloured Pencil on Hot Press Watercolour Paper

I don't know where the idea for "Date Night" came from, but it just popped in my head one day, and I felt I had to paint it. The final illustration is different than that original "pop" - but I'm still quite happy with it.

The original concept was a bit more epic in scope. It was the same image as the center, just pulling the "camera" back to show the whole audience. The idea was to show these guys were just another couple amongst all kinds of different people. The thing that altered it was, among the other people, there was going to be an uptight conservative couple giving them the stink-eye. But as I drew them, they just kept ruining the piece. Maybe I was doing too good a job, and they were bringing down the piece the same way actual people like them ruin an experience for me. But in the end, I decided to close in to just showed the Bear & Cub couple, making all the people around them less important. Though it ended differently than I had intended, I am exceptionally happy with how the painting turned out, I think it's a really cute illustration. I hope you enjoy it too!

I don't know where the idea for "Date Night" came from exactly, one day it just popped in my head and I felt I had to paint it. The final illustration is different than that original "pop" which was a bit more epic in scope. It was the same image as far as the couple goes, just pulling the "camera" back to show the whole audience. The idea was to show these guys were just another couple amongst all kinds of different people.

The thing that ended up changing the piece was, among the other people in the audience, there was going to be an uptight conservative couple giving them the stink-eye. But as I drew them, they just kept ruining the piece... which may be a little too indicative of real life; they were just bringing down the piece the same way actual people like them ruin an experience for me. But without them, the rest of the audience made less and less sense, so in the end, I decided to just close in to just showed the Bear & Cub couple.

Although the painting ended differently than I had intended, I am exceptionally happy with how the painting turned out, I think it's a really cute illustration. I hope you enjoy it too!
