I’m still learning how to use this new blogging feature for my site and I can’t think of a better image to experiment with. I am so very pleased to announce I’ve finished what I hope will be the cover illustration to my first book! I say right off - this doesn’t HAVE to be the cover illustration, but when the book is published, I WILL be doing the illustration - there won’t be any discussion. It’s one of the few things I want.
Anyway - the original painting is 19 3/4 x 28 1/2 inches. Gouache paints and coloured pencil on mounted watercolour paper. The title was created and added via PhotoShop. I also enhanced my name… which is painted right into the illustration. It’s WAY bigger than I would normally do it. But the idea is for it to act as my signiture for the illustration AND my credit as the author of the book.
As for the painting itself - I am very happy with the way it turned out. I struggled with the likenesses of some of the smaller images, but ultimately, I think it worked out. And I think it has a nice balance of feeling like a book cover with a bit of the flavor of a movie poster. But most importantly - I think it’ll draw people in to read the story… which I am equally as proud of.
I don’t know if it’s the next illustration I do, but there is still the back cover illustration and inside flaps to do. Hopefully they’ll turn out as well.
